Degrees of Separation

The title of the work alludes to the notion of there being six degrees of separation between everyone on the planet. This investigation is about establishing degrees of separation between me and the creative process of sculpting: letting go of previous methods of working, relinquishing control of an intentional outcome, and fully allowing external forces create a spontaneous piece of sculpture. The random outcomes of this and other experimental eroded sculptures nurtures much deeper knowledge of the material and greater understanding of the interaction between myself and alabaster. This in turn provokes the desire for further experimentation and exploration.

However, underpinning this theme of separation there are actually no degrees of separation between alabaster and any of us because of the intimate link, through calcium, to all life and death on the planet.

There are just interactions, rhythms, cycles and flow.
